Background of the study
Interactive whiteboards (IWBs) are technological tools that integrate the functionality of traditional whiteboards with modern digital technologies, enabling interactive teaching and learning. Teachers can display multimedia content, interact with the board through touch, and engage students in real-time activities. IWBs have been shown to enhance student engagement, improve visual learning, and support a variety of teaching styles (Fang & Xu, 2023; Lee & Kim, 2024).

In Ilorin East, Kwara State, the adoption of IWBs in secondary schools presents an opportunity to transform traditional teaching methods into more dynamic, interactive experiences. Despite the growing interest in IWBs, their effectiveness is influenced by factors such as teacher preparedness, technical support, and the integration of IWBs into the curriculum. This study will assess how interactive whiteboards are used in secondary schools in Ilorin East and their impact on teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes.

Statement of the problem
While interactive whiteboards offer numerous advantages in enhancing teaching and learning, the full potential of IWBs in secondary schools in Ilorin East is yet to be realized. The effectiveness of IWBs is hindered by challenges such as insufficient teacher training, lack of adequate technical support, and limited integration of IWBs into teaching practices. This study aims to investigate the impact of IWBs on teaching effectiveness and identify the factors influencing their effectiveness in Ilorin East's secondary schools.

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of interactive whiteboards in enhancing teaching and learning in secondary schools in Ilorin East.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by teachers and students in utilizing interactive whiteboards effectively.
  3. To explore the factors that contribute to the successful integration of interactive whiteboards into classroom teaching.

Research questions

  1. How effective are interactive whiteboards in enhancing teaching and learning in Ilorin East’s secondary schools?
  2. What challenges do teachers and students face in using interactive whiteboards in Ilorin East’s secondary schools?
  3. What factors contribute to the successful integration of interactive whiteboards into classroom teaching in Ilorin East?

Significance of the study
This study will provide insights into the effectiveness of interactive whiteboards in secondary schools in Ilorin East, highlighting the challenges and factors that influence their successful integration into teaching practices. The findings will be beneficial for educators, school administrators, and policymakers in improving the use of IWBs to enhance the learning experience.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to secondary schools in Ilorin East Local Government Area, Kwara State, and focuses on the use and effectiveness of interactive whiteboards in teaching and learning. It will not include schools outside Ilorin East or explore other digital teaching tools.
